Sullivan Gulch Hiking Trail
Hiking near Estes Park, Colorado is plentiful and the views can be astounding. This trail is located 11 miles east of Estes Park in the Big Thompson Canyon. The trailhead is right off of Highway 34, but hard to see as there is no trailhead sign! This hike is lightly traveled, but be aware that the parking lot can only fit about 5 cars at a time. Take care pulling in, the parking area is fairly rocky. (There is also a pull-off nearby to park at if it’s too rough, or if the lot is full!)
Hiking the Trail
This trail is just shy of 3 miles round trip, with about a 1000 foot elevation gain, so be prepared for a climb!
This trail is rocky and easy to lose at times near the beginning, but as you hike higher the trail becomes more clear. The climb up is fairly steep, but there is a beautiful view every time you stop to catch your breath! There is plenty of shade as you hike up, but the trees thin out near the top of the trail.
As we like to say, the views at the top are definitely worth the hike up! That’s why we do it, right? The steep trail levels out in a little valley with panoramic views. The main trail leads you to the right, and to the left is a smaller trail to follow for more exploration. Either way you go, there are many great places to stop for a snack and to soak in the wilderness. This is also a great hike for some wildflowers in the spring!
If you are looking to get some hiking in near Estes Park, but not in Rocky Mountain National Park, this is a perfect trail! I would recommend this hike if you’re staying in Estes Park or live in the area. It is a great hike to get away from the crowds and enjoy nature.
Great views here.
